This data tool lets you check the bias of media sources you encounter online. Use it to inform your response to posts on Facebook and Twitter.
The higher the dot in the matrix, the more likely the source is offering serious news. Green is news and analysis, yellow is opinion and may require seeking other perspectives, while red is suspect. Help fight fake news and alternative facts: Red, White, or Blue, get your news in the GREEN!
Our Mission
We are absolutely not experts in media bias. However, we spend significant time on social media and are passionate about connecting folks with the people who are experts. Right, Left, or Center, we want people to be armed with the knowledge they need to understand the potential bias in the news they consume. The media bias data we show are not our own. We simply work to make existing data available to as many people as possible in an easy to access manner.
The source we use to determine the ratings of various media outlets in our tool is the Media Bias Chart developed by adfontesmedia.com. The methodology used for the chart can be found here:
- Open the Facebook app
- Pick a post and identify the media source
- Go to CheckYoSource.org in your browser
- Select the source from the drop-down menu
- Click the download icon in the lower right corner of the tool and select "image"
- Click and hold to copy the image.
- Return to the Facebook app and paste the image in the comment field.
- Return to the tool and copy the following text: “This source typically displays the following media bias. To use this tool yourself, go to www.CheckYoSource.org”
- Return to the Facebook app
- Paste in the "write a comment" field.
- Click to post
- Go to Facebook in your browser
- Pick a post and identify the media source
- Open another tab and go to CheckYoSource.org in your browser
- Select the source from the drop-down menu
- Click the download icon in the lower right corner of the tool and select "image"
- Click on the downloaded image to open in the photo viewer.
- Right click the image to copy.
- Return to Facebook and paste in the comment field.
- Return to the tool and copy the following text: “This source typically displays the following media bias. To use this tool yourself, go to www.CheckYoSource.org”
- Return to Facebook
- Paste the text in the "say something" box.
- Click to post
- Open the Twitter app
- Pick a tweet and identify the media source
- Go to CheckYoSource.org in your browser
- Select the source from the drop-down menu
- Click the download icon in the lower right corner of the tool and select "image"
- Click and hold to copy the image.
- Return to the Twitter app, start a reply, and paste the image in the field.
- Return to the tool and copy the following text: “This source typically displays the following media bias. To use this tool yourself, go to www.CheckYoSource.org
- Return to the Twitter app
- Paste the text in the "tweet your reply" field.
- Click to post
- Go to Twitter in your browser
- Pick a post and identify the media source
- Open another tab and go to CheckYoSource.org in your browser
- Select the source from the drop-down menu
- Click the download icon in the lower right corner of the tool and select "image"
- Click on the downloaded image to open in the photo viewer.
- Right click the image to copy.
- Return to Twitter and paste in the comment field.
